Note from the Dean
After our sunny commencement ceremony yesterday, a faculty colleague observed that graduation felt "more victorious than usual" this year.  I could not agree more.
For me, the feeling of victory pervading the celebration was matched by a sense of swelling pride and gratitude.  I am so very proud of all we did to deliver an exceptional educational experience to our students amidst a pandemic.  I will not list the countless ways you went above and beyond, but I hope you know how grateful I am for your efforts.
I also feel a sense of peace about the June decision.  This peace is not born of naïve optimism or secret intelligence; instead, I am fortified by my understanding of our communal character.  Whatever the decision, our campus community is tenacious, resilient, and most importantly, committed to helping our students thrive.  The challenges of this year leave me more confident than ever in our collective willingness to give our best to our institution.  Like the deep love our alumni cherish for W&L, faculty commitment to W&L remains strong and true.  We may express ourselves differently, but just as each student generation defines the Honor System according to its time, faculty love is embodied in our passionate dedication to sustaining W&L's excellence into the future.  Every year, commencement reminds us of this abiding truth as we send our students into the world.
Graduation also signals the end of the academic year.  After last summer's many virtual instruction sessions and infrequent social gatherings, I hope the coming months are filled with a renewed focus on scholarship as well as in-person time with family and friends.  Here's to a summer of research, rest, and rejuvenation.  You most certainly deserve it.

FACULTY SPOTLIGHT
ELIZABETH DENNE, ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OF MATHEMATICS
In addition to being a beloved professor, Elizabeth has worked exceptionally hard mentoring students in their mathematical studies and helping them decide on their career paths. Her webpage contains a wealth of information on careers in mathematics and graduate school.  Before COVID, she traveled frequently to give talks on her Knot Theory research, which often involves finding deep mathematics in everyday ideas such as tying a tie.
