A midmonth update? Yes please!
Nobel Symposium
The College is happy to announce the Fall portion of the Nobel Symposium which celebrates this year's greatest achievements in mathematics and physics. Special thanks to our presenters, Tom Marcais, and Cory Colbert who will help us celebrate this year's Nobel Prize in Physics and the Fields Medals.
All talks are in the atrium of The Harte Center for Teaching and Learning early in the afternoon (see times below) with refreshments provided. The talks are highly interactive with 20 minutes for the talk and plenty of time after for questions and discussion. We hope to see you there!
October 26, 12:15 – 1:15pm - Harte Center 128
Tom Marcais, Senior Technology Integration Specialist, will present the Nobel Prize in Physics. This prize was awarded jointly to Alain Aspect, John F. Clauser, and Anton Zeilinger "for experiments with entangled photons, establishing the violation of Bell inequalities and pioneering quantum information science"
November 16, 1:30 – 2:30 pm - Harte Center 128
Cory Colbert, Assistant Professor of Mathematics, will present this year's Mathematics Field Medal recipients. You will learn about this year's best work in mathematics with particular emphasis on the work of James Maynard in analytic number theory, which has led to major advances in the understanding of the structure of prime numbers and in Diophantine approximation.
We will continue our Nobel Symposium during the Winter Term with several additional talks. Please stay tuned!

"Thinking with the Mystics"
It's not every day you hear of someone falling into trance and delivering messages from God in rhyme. Still more extraordinary are the stakes of such events. Can they spark political resistance? Do they sway public opinion and action? This talk explores the lives of early modern British women who influenced political and religious movements through their mystical poetry and visions. Don't look for them in your Norton Anthology.
-Tuesday, October 18th at 6:15pm in the Northen Auditorium (Leyburn Library)

"Uncovering the mysteries of Pompeii"
In the year 79, Mount Vesuvius buried Pompeii under 30+ feet of volcanic debris, preserving the remains of the town in remarkable detail. Even after two centuries of excavation, Pompeii still continues to reveal its secrets. Thousands of handwritten texts on the walls of Pompeii tell a new story of what life was like in the first century. This talk presents the detective work of archaeology and the value of interrogating evidence - even evidence that may have long been ignored.
-Thursday, November 10th at 5:00pm in the Stackhouse Theater
