Note from the Dean
It's hard to believe midterm grades soon will be due. October is busy for faculty and students alike as we welcome parents to campus, manage the increasing workload of the advancing term, and juggle the many commitments that characterize the progressing academic year. These realities can prove both exhilarating and exhausting, and we must be mindful of students who need extra support.
If you are advising first-year students, transfers, and other new or probationary students, be sure you review their midterm grades in Self-Service and plan to meet with them October 24-31. This is an excellent opportunity to check on students' academic progress as well as their social and mental wellbeing. You might also discuss their interests in winter term courses, possible majors, and co-curricular activities. If students appear to need additional support, guide them toward academic resources (https://www.wlu.edu/academics/academic-resources), the appropriate class dean in Student Affairs (540-458-8754), or the Student Health Center (540-458-8401).
This can also be a taxing time for faculty, so take care of yourself! Check out Live Well W&L (https://www.wlu.edu/human-resources/wellness) along with local options for staying fit, healthy, and mentally recharged. The many forms your work takes—both with students and in your fields of expertise—constitutes the heart of what makes W&L an exceptional institution. I often tell W&L parents that we welcome their children into a valley where we prepare students to "climb every mountain and ford every stream." But that's only possible if faculty balance their personal well-being with their commitment to our collective mission. Thank you for all you do.
