May 2026

A Note From Campus
May is a big month on campus. We kicked things off with Alumni Weekend, and, once again, we set multiple attendance and giving records! This year was extra special to me as my class celebrated our 25th. I was able to see, through my classmates' eyes, how much W&L means to so many. I am grateful to do this work and witness the joy the Colonnade, a sports field, old friends or a former professor (and so much more) brings to our alumni. As we often joke on campus, there is no time to rest. We then swiftly move to Commencement season, starting with the law school and finishing with our undergraduates. So much of the specialness of W&L shines through during this time of year. Students focus their studies on one intense, unique class, and alumni return for Alumni Weekend – and I love seeing and hearing stories of both parties interacting and meeting on campus and abroad.
We have amazing content this month, but I draw your attention to our Kathekon story. Kathekon was founded on campus more than 40 years ago. While so much of the student's role remains the same, we are now expanding their duties and are excited for what the next 40 years bring.
And with his last Commencement next week, I'd like to thank President Dudley for all he's done for W&L during his 10-year term as president. We are grateful for his dedication to the university.

W&L Network Abroad
Linda Hooks, professor of economics, and Kristina Roney, assistant professor of French, gave students in their Spring Term Abroad class, Exploring European Policy, Business and Culture, a taste of the wide-reaching W&L network. In Paris, they met up with Ben Atnipp '15 (above), CEO of French start-up Vianova, and had a Zoom discussion with several W&L alumni, including L. Fernando Bravo '96. In Brussels, Maciej Golubiewski '99 (below), a senior official at the European Commission, gave students an inside look into the inner workings of the EC and facilitated a tour of the Parliament Hemicycle. The class continued to London, where they met with Allison Bruneau Edwards '01, managing director of global leveraged finance credit at Bank of America, and Warren Stephens '79, P'12, the U.S. ambassador to the United Kingdom.

In Case You Missed It!
The Cadaver Society at Washington and Lee University has pledged $1.5 million to the Leading Lives of Consequence campaign, the largest publicly known commitment in the secret society's nearly 70-year tradition of anonymous philanthropy. The gift will name the outdoor terrace at Founders Hall — the new home of Admissions, Financial Aid and the Johnson Program in Leadership and Integrity, at the corner of Washington Street and Lee Avenue — and provide $500,000 to the W&L Fund over five years. Along with this pledge, the society has issued the Cadaver Society $26K for '26 Challenge to alumni through May 22 to unlock an additional $26,000 for the W&L Fund (see the Connect section for more information).

Coming Next Month: Changes to Your W&L Alumni Email Account
ITS is completing a major project to improve the Microsoft email experience. As part of this work, alumni who use alumni.wlu.edu email accounts will be required to reset their password; law alumni will be prompted on or around June 15 and undergraduate alumni on or around June 22. Prior to the transition, you will receive a temporary password with instructions for completing the reset.
No action is required at this time. Once received, please be sure to save your temporary password and keep it accessible. Without it, you won't be able to sign in to your alumni email account after the cutover until your identity is verified and a new temporary password is sent to an alternate email address.
If you do not regularly check your alumni email inbox, we recommend setting a calendar reminder to monitor messages from ITS to ensure you don't miss important instructions coming in June. Please contact the ITS Helpdesk at 540-458-4357 or help@wlu.edu if you have any questions.

Continuing a Legacy
During this year's Alumni Weekend, Ken Holda '76, P'06 and his daughter, Kristine Holda Gilbert '06, celebrated their 50th and 20th reunions together (they were one of four legacy families in attendance). In the lead-up to the springtime festivities, Gilbert reflected on her time at W&L and the mentor she and her father shared: Dave Dickens, professor of German.
"Without a doubt, Dave is the reason why Lexington always felt like home to me. If it were not for my father's relationship with him, I would not have attended W&L and had the experiences that I count so lucky to be mine. ... This spring we plan to attend my father's 50th and my 20th reunion, again bringing it full circle where I am bringing my daughter, Lexie [named after Lexington], to Lexington for her first visit at the same age that I was when I arrived on W&L's campus for the first time and declared that I would someday be a student there. Unfortunate as it is that Dave will not be here to meet her, I am absolutely looking forward to introducing her to his grandchildren, the daughters of Dave's daughter, Barbara, who is one of my dearest and cherished friends from my childhood. The legacy of friendship and influence will hopefully continue into the next generation, and I can't wait to see where it takes us next."
