Washington and Lee Athletics
Much has happened over the last month in W&L Athletics, as teams continue to build up their resumes for postseason play. Women's soccer remains unbeaten and untied since their season opener and is now 10-1 and ranked 15th in the latest United Soccer Coaches poll. The men's soccer team has rebounded after a slow start and now sits at 8-3-2 overall and is back in the national poll at No. 20. Senior Weyimi Agbeyegbe has also made noise individually with two ODAC Player of the Week awards, and he is closing in on becoming the program's all-time leading scorer.
Field hockey is 8-4 overall, while volleyball has continued to impress with a 19-2 overall record and a No. 14 national ranking. The W&L men's cross country team has won its last two events and is ranked 23rd in the latest USTFCCCA poll, their highest in program history. The women's cross country team has topped their respective fields in two of their last three times out, and football has won its last two contests (35-0 over Averett and 28-26 over Hampden-Sydney). The W&L tennis teams recently completed their fall schedules. First-year Allie Murrell was one of the highlights, making it to the semifinals in both the doubles and singles brackets at the ITA Regional Championships in late September.
The W&L men's golf team, having most recently placed second at the Gate City Invite and winning the GolfWeek D3 Invitational outright, reached the No. 1 national rankings in the latest Clippd/NCAA rankings. Senior Elias Malakoff and sophomore Jonathan McEwen led the way at the GolfWeek D3 Invite, tying for the individual title with scores of 202 (-11). On the women's side, the Generals have continued to place in the Top 10 in each tournament so far this fall after a ninth place at the Tartan Invitational and coming in seventh at the GolfWeek D3 Invite. Finally, the W&L riding team has been led by junior Elisabeth Marek, who has earned high point rider honors twice in three shows.
W&L Athletics' winter season is also just around the corner, with teams beginning their first official practices within the last week. To keep up with the fall teams' push toward ODAC and NCAA tournament play, as well as the start of winter sports season, click here.
